Organic Vanilla Extract
Have you ever tasted the difference between imitation vanilla extract and pure, organic vanilla extract? If you have, you would know that pure, organic vanilla beats out the imitation version in taste every time, and I’m going to explain why…
Vanilla is known to be an expensive ingredient. Why? Well, vanilla is extracted from the seed pods of a variety of orchids that only grow in tropical climates. The vanilla orchid is difficult to cultivate artificially because of its pollination process. In other words, it’s laborious… so it’s a good thing a little goes a long way.
To cut costs, companies started to market artificial vanilla using vanillin, the primary chemical component of vanilla beans. But instead of using the pure vanillin, it became popular to extract it from coal tar or wood pulp as a by-product of paper production, or even add corn syrup to the formulas. Doesn’t sound very appetizing or healthy, does it?
Well, that’s not the case with my Organic Vanilla Extract, which only includes the following ingredients: organic vanilla bean extractives, water, and organic alcohol.
Why do I put organic alcohol in my Organic Vanilla Extract? Real vanilla extract is required by law to contain at least 35% alcohol, while imitation extracts have no alcohol requirement.
